*** PLEASE FORWARD TO YOUR DUTCH CONNECTIONS ABROAD ***
Earlier this Saturday austerity talks among PVV, CDA and VVD collapsed – which means that most likely the Dutch cabinet hand over its resignation this coming Monday and new elections will need to be announced.
Until new elections take place, the then “demissionary” cabinet will only be allowed to carry out “current affairs” – unless they are deemed “controversial” by a reasonable minority in Parliament. These “controversial” topics cannot be further discussed and their legislative process is immediately halted.
When it comes to the bill regarding dual citizenship, it is highly likely (if not certain) that Parliament will declare this bill controversial – D66 has already vowed to make this happen and to look for (expected) support. Consequently, the bill would come to a sudden halt, only to be picked up by a new cabinet should it desire to do so. Since this bill was an obvious wish of the PVV and a next cabinet with PVV seems impossible (strong tensions between PVV on one hand and CDA/VVD on the other), it is not to be expected this bill will get any further than where it currently stands.
Dynamics in The Hague can be tricky though and confirmation updates will be released as soon as possible. Still, the unexpected turn of events of the past hours dramatically increased the chances that the current citizen rights for Dutch people abroad will not be further damaged.
In this respect it is noteworthy that today D66 adopted a motion during its Congress, explicitly standing up for the rights of all Dutch citizens abroad. A (Dutch) press article describing this motion can be found here:

Conclusion: the glass is now at least half full and prospects are suddenly very bright! Please spread the word, and make sure you vote during the upcoming election!
Many thanks,
